Bus & T Service Status for Tuesday, Feb. 9

UPDATED: 10 PM, MONDAY, FEB. 8

Port Authority plans to restore more bus routes on Tuesday morning and resume T service to Steel Plaza and Wood Street stations.

All but 22 bus routes will be providing service by Tuesday morning and snow has been cleared from all but two Park and Ride lots (Mt. Lebanon and Olympia, in McKeesport).

Thirty-nine bus routes will be detoured from their regular routes or not be able to provide service into some areas where roads are not yet passable. Route-by-route details are listed below.

We recommend riders anticipate slow travel and delays during the Tuesday morning rush hour.

Also on Tuesday morning:
* The Mon Incline will be in service.
* The 52 Allentown light rail route will not provide service nor will a bus shuttle be provided - parts of the route are impassable and stranded vehicles are blocking portions of the line.

* The Wabash HOV lanes will remain closed.

We will continue to provide updates on service on this web site, our Twitter site and through local media.

The following bus routes will be detoured, out of service, or offer limited service on Tuesday:

*If a route is not listed, it will follow a regular route and schedule.

*All routes that remain shut down are marked in red.

*In Oakland, buses that normally use the Fifth Avenue bus lane heading outbound instead will use Forbes Avenue. The bus lane has not been plowed.

Bus & T Service Status for Monday, Feb. 8

UPDATED: 3:30 PM

Port Authority continues to provide bus and T service Monday afternoon although snowy roads and slow travel has caused widespread delays throughout the day.

Riders should anticipate the possibility of delays through the afternoon rush hour.

Service is being provided on more than 100 bus routes and on the T light rail system. Some routes have been deviated due to road conditions and drivers sometimes must detour around areas that are impassable. A complete list is provided below.

The T continues to provide service to the First Avenue Station in Downtown. A power issue in the Downtown subway prevents T service into the Steel Plaza and Wood Street stations. Bus shuttles have been serving temporary stops located outside the stations.

Other service issues:

* The Authority continues to clear Park and Ride lots. Several were not accessible this morning due to snow.
* The Mon Incline was in service today.
* The 52 Allentown light rail route is not in service.
* The Wabash HOV lanes were shut down today.

Another 60 bus routes remain out of service due to weather-related issues across the Authority's service area.

We continue monitoring efforts by public works crews to clear roads and as more routes become available, we will update this web site, our Twitter site and local media.

Working Toward Transparency

Port Authority recently instituted a number of changes designed to make our agency's information more transparent and accessible to riders and the general public.

Here's a roundup of some of the additions and improvements we've made over the last couple of months, including links to new information on our web site:
Audits: Internal audits are now available online in addition to external and independent audits.
Board Materials: Last month we started posting Board agendas and resolutions on our Web site. We also will post meeting minutes starting in late February.
Addressing our Board: There are now more options for submitting requests to speak or make a presentation at Board meetings. Prior to last month, members of the public had to mail or hand-deliver a written request. Now any individual or group may also request to address the Board by filling out this online form.
Previously, requests to speak needed to be made at least two weeks prior to Board meetings. We have shortened the deadline for requests to five business days prior to the meeting date. To give more people an opportunity to speak during a meeting, each individual presentation will be allotted three minutes -- that's in keeping with the policies of comparable public bodies, like Pittsburgh's City Council.
Complaints and Questions: We've also reworked our online complaint, comment and question forms. Until recently, things like bus number and driver number were required fields on our complaint form. We realize riders might not always have those details available (especially if filing a complaint after the fact), so we've changed our form to make it easier to report incidents using only the date/time, route number, location and a description of what happened.
With TDP changes on the way, we know riders have a lot of questions. That's why we've made our comment/question form more prominent via a "Contact Us" link on the home page. This is where you should go if you have a question about upcoming TDP route changes or anything else Port Authority-related...simply input your question and your contact information, and a member of our staff will be in touch.

Transit Data: Up until now, our raw schedule and route data had been available upon request but not readily accessible on our web site. Now developers can freely download our data for use in creating transit applications. We look forward to seeing what our local tech community comes up with!

There's still more we can do to make Port Authority more transparent and to make information more easily accessible, and we'll continue to make changes that keep these goals in mind.

TDP Route Changes Now Start April 4

Port Authority has pushed back the date it will make the first round of route changes as developed through the Transit Development Plan.
The changes initially scheduled to start on Sunday, March 14, will be made three weeks later, starting Sunday, April 4.
Essentially, the move will give riders a few extra weeks to become more familiar with the coming changes. Remember, we're not changing every route on April 4 - these will come in phases over the next couple of years.
More details about the changes, including maps, are available on the Port Authority Web site.
Starting in mid-February, the site will be updated with valuable information about the April 4 changes. Riders may use a route conversion tool along with an interactive map. We'll be sure to announce the release of this information here, on our Twitter site and at portauthority.org.
We decided to push the date back due to an issue experienced as our operators were selecting route assignments. This process occurs about four times a year. The problem resulted in some operators receiving incorrect assignment information and created the potential for service difficulties.
Port Authority, after discussing the matter internally and consulting union officials, felt the best decision for our employees and riders was to correct the problem and allow operators to select assignments again.
We apologize for any inconvenience. However, we sincerely hope you take the extra time to read more about the upcoming changes, check back in mid-February for more detailed information, and sign up today to receive an email notification of upcoming route changes.
If you have specific TDP-related questions, please use this form and a member of our staff will contact you.

Community Contributions

Employees "stuffed the bus" full of toys for kids in need.

In recent months, Port Authority employees have given their time, talents and resources to make our community a better place to live and work. Here's just a sampling of what our employees have done recently...

Drivers from the East Liberty division recently set up a bench-press contest to raise money and awareness for the ALS Association, the organization working to find a cure for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. Employees from the Collier, East Liberty and Ross locations competed, raising $712 for the fight against ALS.

During the holidays, employees at the West Mifflin division participated in the Salvation Army’s “Treasures for Children” toy drive, selecting gift tags and purchasing toys for local underprivileged kids. The Collier division conducted its own “Toys for Tots” drive that benefited the Kiwanis Club of Sheraden and the Collier Community Outreach Committee.

And finally, employees from all Port Authority locations “stuffed the bus” this past holiday season, collecting toys that were delivered via bus to the Allegheny County Labor Council, AFL-CIO, where the toys were distributed to children of unemployed or underemployed labor families.
Many thanks to our employees for their kindness and generosity, and thanks to you, our riders, for participating in last month’s Toys for Tots drive at Steel Plaza T Station.
