Bus Detours for West Carson Work Begin Friday

Numerous Port Authority bus routes will be impacted by the outbound West Carson Street closure that begins the evening of Friday, August 2.

Many of these routes will detour, but some will remain on regular route. All routes in this corridor will be subject to delays due to detours and/or altered traffic patterns.

Bus routes 21 Coraopolis, 22 McCoy, 24 West Park, 28X Airport Flyer and G2 West Busway-All Stops will have a temporary detour from 9 p.m. August 2 until the night’s end of service during initial set-up for the closure. Then, on the morning of Saturday, August 3, the long-term detours or delay advisories listed below go into effect.

These conditions will be in effect for approximately two years while PennDOT completes a major reconstruction of the corridor.

20 Kennedy, 21 Coraopolis, 22 McCoy, 24 West Park
These routes will not serve Downtown Pittsburgh during the long-term detour that begins August 3. Instead, they will use the McKees Rocks Bridge and Route 65 to and from Allegheny T Station on the North Shore. Riders may make the free transfer between bus and light rail to complete their trip to/from Downtown. View notice for detour for night of Friday, August 2 only. View long-term detour notice.

26 Chartiers, 27 Fairywood, 29 Robinson and 31 Bridgeville
These routes will not be detoured. However, inbound delays are possible, particularly during the a.m. peak, and significant delays are likely to occur outbound, especially during the early weeks of the closure when new traffic patterns are becoming established.

28X Airport Flyer and G2 West Busway-All Stops
These routes will detour outbound using the West End Circle, Steuben Street and Chartiers Avenue to Chartiers Ramp and the West Busway. All busway stations will be served during the detour. They will remain on regular route inbound except in cases of blocked traffic on West Carson, when they may detour via the West End (all normal stops will be served when this detour is used). Riders should expect delays in both directions. View notice for detour for night of Friday, August 2 only. View long-term detour notice.

G3 Moon Flyer and G31 Bridgeville Flyer
These routes will be detoured outbound using the Fort Pitt Tunnel and Parkway West, bypassing the West Busway. They will remain on regular route inbound except in cases of blocked traffic on West Carson, when they may detour via the West End (all normal stops will be served when this detour is used). View long-term detour notice.

Inbound Red Line Detours This Weekend

Port Authority will detour inbound Red Line T service this weekend in order to conduct track repairs in Beechview.

Detours will be in effect from start of service until end of service on Saturday, July 27 and Sunday, July 28.

Inbound Red Line service will serve its regular stops from South Hills Village to Overbrook Junction/Willow, then detour using the Blue Line’s routing to South Hills Junction, where it will resume regular routing to Station Square, Downtown and the North Shore. Inbound local light rail shuttles will operate from Overbrook Junction to Potomac Station, and inbound T stops from Potomac to South Hills Junction/Station Square will be served by bus shuttles.

Outbound Red Line will remain on regular route.

Riders should allow for extra time when traveling on detoured service. This work is subject to cancellation in the event of inclement weather.

For more information, please view the Detour Notice or call Customer Service at 412-442-2000 (TTY 412-231-7007).

Wabash Tunnel Reopens July 27

The Wabash Tunnel will reopen Saturday, July 27, at 6 a.m. after a long-term closure for repairs to its gates and traffic control systems.

The reopened tunnel will provide another option for motorists during the 17-day outbound Liberty Tunnel closure and two-year closure of outbound West Carson Street.

Motorists should be advised of a change in the tunnel’s operating hours. The tunnel will no longer be open overnight (from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m.). The change in operating hours was adopted by Port Authority’s Board in April following an extensive police and safety review.

All other operating hours, including HOV-2 restrictions during peak periods, remain unchanged and are posted on our Wabash Tunnel webpage.

Inbound access to the tunnel was closed in late October when a tractor trailer accident damaged the gates that allow Port Authority to safely control the direction of auto traffic. The tunnel was closed to outbound traffic earlier this year so that the gates and traffic control software could be replaced, but repair progress was hampered by additional accidents and procurement delays. Minor software-related work remains, but can be completed without significant impact to tunnel traffic.

The Wabash Tunnel provides a shortcut for motorists between Route 51 and the South Side. Port Authority bus and light rail routes do not use the tunnel.

Light Rail Detours & Transit Tunnel Closure This Weekend

Port Authority’s light rail system will see significant detours this weekend due to rail repairs in Beechview and fan replacement in the Mt. Washington Transit Tunnel. Several bus routes will also be affected by the tunnel closure. The detours will vary by day and time of day as listed below.

Saturday:
Inbound Red Line will be detoured all day (from start of service until end of service) due to rail repairs on Broadway Avenue. Inbound Red Line will operate normally from South Hills Village to Overbrook Junction/Willow, then detour via the Blue Line’s routing toward Downtown/North Shore. An inbound local rail shuttle will operate from Overbrook Junction to Potomac and bus shuttles will transport riders inbound from Potomac to Station Square. At Station Square, riders may transfer to rail to Downtown/North Shore. Outbound Red Line will operate on regular route.

View Saturday's detour notice for inbound Red Line.

Sunday:
  • Start of service until 1 PM: Red Line will be closed in both directions between Potomac and Station Square and bus shuttles will serve the affected T stops. At Station Square riders may transfer to rail shuttles that will be operating to and from the North Shore. T service will operate in both directions between South Hills Village and Potomac.

Additionally, the Mt. Washington Transit Tunnel will be closed during this time for fan replacement work. During the tunnel closure, Blue Line service will operate in both directions between Library and South Hills Junction. At South Hills Junction, riders may catch the bus shuttle to Station Square, where they can then transfer to rail to Downtown/North Shore, reversing the process to travel to the outbound Blue Line.

View the Sunday morning detour notice for rail.

Bus routes that normally use the transit tunnel will also be detoured during this time.  A bus detour notice will be posted once available. View the Sunday morning bus detour notice.

  • 1 PM until end of service: Mt. Washington Transit Tunnel will be open and Blue Line service will operate normally in both directions. Outbound Red Line service will also be on regular routing. Inbound Red Line will revert to its Saturday detour – operating regular route from South Hills Village to Overbrook Junction/Willow, then detouring via the Blue Line’s routing toward Downtown/North Shore. An inbound local rail shuttle will operate from Overbrook Junction to Potomac and bus shuttles will transport riders inbound from Potomac to Station Square. At Station Square, riders may transfer to rail to Downtown/North Shore.

Library Line Closure & Detour July 13-14

Port Authority’s Library Line will be closed south of Washington Junction for most of the day Saturday and Sunday due to tree-trimming operations along the right-of-way. Blue Line-Library light rail service will detoured.

The closure and detour will begin with start of service each morning and end at approximately 4 p.m. on both days.

This work requires power to be turned off along the affected portion of the line. Blue Line-Library service will serve its normal stops between the North Shore and Washington Junction, then detour to South Hills Village. T stops affected by this detour will be served instead by bus shuttles operating in both directions between Washington Junction and Library Station.

Riders using Blue Line-Library service during the detour should allow for extra time when traveling.

A map of the shuttle bus stops is posted below.
