Rail Detours & Transit Tunnel Closure This Sunday

Port Authority light rail service will be detoured at various times Sunday, August 25 by track work in Beechview and a closure of the Mt. Washington Transit Tunnel. Several bus routes will also be affected by the transit tunnel closure.

From start of service until approximately 5 p.m., outbound Red Line T service will be detoured for track repairs on Broadway Avenue. Outbound Red Line will serve its regular stops from the North Shore to South Hills Junction, then detour via the Blue Line’s routing to Willow/Overbrook, where it will resume regular route to South Hills Village. Outbound bus shuttles will run from Station Square to Potomac and outbound local rail shuttles will operate from Potomac to Overbrook.
View detour notice.

Inbound Red Line will remain on regular route during this time.

After this detour concludes around 5 p.m., T service will operate normally until about 8 p.m. Then at 8 p.m., the Mt. Washington Transit Tunnel will be closed for fan replacement work. This will detour several bus routes and cause Red Line and Blue Line service to operate only as far north as South Hills Junction. During the closure, Subway Local service will operate in both directions between the North Shore and Station Square, and bus shuttles will operate between Station Square and South Hills Junction. At South Hills Junction, riders may transfer to/from Red Line-South Hills Village and Blue Line-Library T service.
View detour notice.

The transit tunnel closure and related detours will be in effect until the evening’s end of service.

Please allow for extra time when traveling on detoured service.

Real-Time Info Pilot Launches for P1 Bus Route

Starting today, riders will be able to view real-time locations for the P1 East Busway-All Stops bus route through Port Authority’s website.

This is the initial testing and demonstration phase of Port Authority’s real-time arrivals system. This initial phase will be limited to only the P1 route and only those buses on regular route (not detoured).

We expect to begin installing additional equipment and rolling out real-time capability to additional routes in early 2014. The project will proceed in phases, with a goal of having most of the bus system covered by 2015. Additional real-time system features will also be introduced in phases. For example, open data for developers and tracking of detoured routes will be available at a later date.

Real-time for Port Authority’s T system will be implemented separately since our light rail vehicles do not currently use GPS-enabled signs and annunciators – instead, a light rail vehicle’s position is announced when the vehicle passes over certain points on the tracks.

Currently, real-time arrival information for the P1 is only available online, but starting next month, Port Authority will install electronic countdown signs at select locations along the Martin Luther King Jr. East Busway.

To view arrival information for the P1 East Busway-All Stops route, please visit Port Authority's real-time website hosted by Clever Devices.

For questions or assistance, please contact Port Authority Customer Service at 412-442-2000 (TTY 412-231-7007).

Service Changes Take Effect Sunday, Sept.1

Schedules for approximately 15 Port Authority bus routes will be adjusted effective Sunday, September 1. Port Authority regularly adjusts schedules four times a year.

September’s service changes include the restoration of a previously eliminated route – the former 55 Jefferson, which will now be called 55 Glassport. Restoring the route will help ensure riders in this part of the Mon Valley will have access to public transportation, as they currently face losing transit service with the uncertain future of the Heritage Worklink van transportation program.

Restoration of the 55 Glassport was achieved within the Authority’s current budget, which did not require a fare increase or other service reductions.

Ensuring Mon Valley residents maintain access to public transportation became a community-wide concern, and a solution was achieved thanks to the cooperative efforts of numerous local officials, including County Executive Rich Fitzgerald, State Senators Jay Costa and Jim Brewster, State Representatives Marc Gergely, Bill Kortz, Paul Costa and Harry Readshaw, and Allegheny County Council Member Bob Macey.

Information on the changes, including links to new schedules, is now posted on our Service Changes page.

Updated: Next Phase of Warrington Avenue Work Begins Monday, August 5

On Monday, August 5, contractors will begin the next phase of roadway rehabilitation on Warrington Avenue between Beltzhoover and Arlington avenues, shifting work from the inbound side of the street to the outbound side.

Auto traffic detours for this phase of work will remain the same. Traffic traveling toward Downtown Pittsburgh will use Warrington Avenue. Traffic traveling in the opposite direction will be detoured using Industry Street.

Additionally, roadway construction will impact the intersection of Warrington Avenue and Haberman Avenue around-the-clock from 6 a.m. Monday until the evening of Friday, August 9. During this time, Warrington Avenue will be reduced to one lane at this intersection, with flaggers controlling traffic.

Port Authority’s bus detours will change with this new phase of work. A long-term detour for the 43 Bailey, 44 Knoxville, 48 Arlington and 54 North Side-Oakland-South Side routes will go into effect starting Monday at 8 a.m. and continue around-the-clock until the afternoon of Friday, September 13. View information on this detour.

In addition to the long-term bus detour, an additional detour will be in place from 6 a.m. Monday to late afternoon Friday, August 9 due to the work at the intersection of Warrington Avenue and Haberman Avenue. View information on this detour.

This phase of work is estimated to take approximately six weeks to complete. Following this phase, there will be some final rail repairs. The entire project is expected to end in mid-September.

Warrington Avenue is partially owned by Port Authority as it contains embedded light rail tracks formerly used by the Allentown line.

For more information, contact Port Authority Customer Service at 412-442-2000 (TTY 412-231-7007).
