Mt. Washington Transit Tunnel Closed This Weekend, Detouring Buses & T

The Mt. Washington Transit Tunnel will be closed to buses and light rail all day Saturday, December 15 and Sunday, December 16 so that Port Authority may conduct work on the tunnel’s ventilation system.

Red Line and Blue Line light rail service will detour in both directions via the former Allentown line while the tunnel is closed, bypassing Station Square for the entire weekend.

On Saturday, Subway Local service will continue to serve Station Square (enabling riders to transfer to/from regular light rail service in Downtown), but will not serve South Hills Junction.

On Sunday, however, Subway Local service will also be rerouted via Allentown, bypassing Station Square but serving South Hills Junction. Riders headed to or from Station Square should use bus routes to transfer at South Hills Junction or in Downtown. For service inbound, riders may catch buses 39, 40, 41, 43, 44, 48, 51, Y46, Y47 or Y49 at East Carson at the Smithfield Street Bridge (please note that the South Busway at Station Square stop will be out of service due to the tunnel closure). For service outbound to South Hills Junction riders may catch buses 39, 40, 41, 43, 44, 48 Y46, Y47 or Y49 at Smithfield Street Bridge at Station Square.

Many of those bus routes will also be detoured due to the tunnel closure, and will travel via Warrington and Arlington avenues, so riders should allow for extra travel time.

Regular routing is slated to resume in time for Monday morning’s commute.
