Weekend Red Line Detour is Canceled

The rail work scheduled for Port Authority’s Red Line in Beechview this weekend is canceled.

This work would have detoured inbound Red Line T service all day tomorrow and Sunday. Instead, all Red Line service will remain on regular routing.

A new date for this work will be announced at a later time. Several weekends of Beechview rail work are planned for this spring and summer.

Red Line Rail Work This Weekend & Later This Spring-Summer

Port Authority will detour Red Line T service on several weekends this spring and summer in order to conduct track repairs in Beechview.

The following weekends are scheduled for rail work:

•April 27-28 (inbound)
•May 11-12 (inbound)
•May 18-19 (inbound)
•July 20-21 (direction to be announced)
•July 27-28 (if needed)

The T will detour between Overbrook Junction and South Hills Junction all day each Saturday and Sunday. During the work, service to Red Line stops will be provided by a combination of detoured Red Line service, bus shuttles and local light rail shuttles.

For example, this weekend (April 27-28) inbound Red Line service will use regular route from South Hills Village to Overbrook Junction/Willow, then detour via the Blue Line’s routing until South Hills Junction, where it will resume regular routing to Station Square, Downtown and the North Shore. Inbound local light rail shuttles will operate from Overbrook Junction to Potomac Station, and inbound T stops from Potomac to South Hills Junction/Station Square will be served by bus shuttles. Outbound Red Line will be regular route.

The closure schedule is subject to change due to inclement weather or other factors. Information will be released prior to each weekend closure to confirm times and detour routing.

Red Line riders should allow for extra time when traveling during these detours.

Buses Detour for MS Walk

More than 40 Port Authority bus routes will be detoured in Downtown and the North Shore on Sunday due to street closures for the annual MS Walk.

Detours will be in place from approximately 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

During the detour, bus routes that come from the North Side and West End will not enter Downtown. These routes will terminate at Allegheny Station and riders should take the T from Downtown to transfer to their bus. The only exception is the 28X Airport Flyer, which will have one Downtown stop at Seventh and Smithfield for service to the airport. 28X will also serve Allegheny Station during the detour.Other routes will have temporary stop changes Downtown.

Wabash Tunnel Repairs Start Monday, Requiring Multi-Week Closure

The Wabash Tunnel will close completely for 3-4 weeks beginning Monday, April 15 at 6 a.m. so that Port Authority contractors may begin installation of four new traffic control gates. This work will help restore inbound access to the tunnel, which has been closed since the fall.

Inbound access to the tunnel was closed in late October when a tractor trailer accident damaged the gates that allow Port Authority to safely control the direction of auto traffic. Since then, efforts to repair the damage and reopen the tunnel to inbound motorists have been hampered by two additional accidents and delays in procuring replacement parts.

Completion of repairs and restoration of all traffic access is expected by the end of May.

The Wabash Tunnel provides a shortcut for motorists between Route 51 and the South Side. No Port Authority transit service operates through the tunnel.

Port Authority apologizes for the inconvenience caused by the delayed repair efforts and thanks tunnel users for their patience.

Partial East Busway Closure This Weekend

A large portion of Port Authority’s East Busway will be closed this weekend for construction work on the S. Highland Avenue Bridge and East Liberty Transit Center projects, as well as repairs to the busway’s Neville Ramp.

The closure will begin Saturday, April 13 at midnight and is expected to end early Monday Downtown through East Liberty during this time.

The P1 will not serve Penn, Herron, Negley and East Liberty stations during the closure, and morning before start of service. The P1 East Busway-All Stops bus route will be detoured from will instead use Bigelow Boulevard, Baum Boulevard and Penn Avenue between Downtown and the busway ramp at Port Authority’s East Liberty bus garage. Temporary stops will be located on local streets near the stations: Bigelow at Herron, Baum at Roup/Negley and Penn near the East Liberty Target. Additionally, the P1’s Downtown stops will change slightly during the detour.

P1 riders should allow for extra travel time during the detour.

Transit Tunnel Closed to Buses Sunday; T Service Single-Tracking

Mt. Washington Transit Tunnel will be closed to buses from about 5 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday due to rail work. Light rail service will be single-tracking between the Panhandle Bridge and South Hills Junction during this time, and outbound riders at Station Square and South Hills Junction must board from inbound platforms.

The 40 Mt. Washington, 41 Bower Hill, 44 Knoxville, Y46 Elizabeth Flyer and Y49 Prospect Flyer bus routes will detour inbound via Warrington and Arlington avenues and outbound via the Wabash Tunnel and Warrington Avenue, with minor temporary stop changes for inbound service.
